ミシガン州生まれ。幼少期は体操のオリンピック選手を夢見ていた。2002年、大学卒業後にアメリカ陸軍に入隊。2004年、イラク戦争で派遣されたバグダッドで沿道にあった爆弾が爆発し左脚を失う。 退役後に水泳を始め、2008年に北京パラリンピックに出場、閉会式では旗手を務めた。
同年トライアスロンに転向後、アスリートとしての才能が花開く。3度の国内女王、3度の世界女王、アイアンマン完走（3.86kmスイム／180.25kmバイク／42.2kmラン）など、そのキャリアは圧巻。
妊娠・出産を経験し、パラリンピックの舞台からは遠ざかっていたが、2016年リオ大会からトライアスロンが正式競技に採用されると、彼女は女王として8年ぶりにパラリンピックの舞台に舞い戻った。リオで、パラリンピックにおけるトライアスロン初レースが行われたのは、9月11日のことだった。

Born in Michigan USA. As a young child, Stockwell dreamed to become an Olympic gymnast. In college, she joined the ROTC. After graduating, she was commissioned in the army and two years later was deployed to Iraq.
Three weeks into her tour, a roadside bomb tore through her Humvee. The blast resulted in the loss of her left leg, making Stockwell the first female US soldier to lose a limb in the Iraq War. She swam extensively while in recovery.
There, she learned about the Paralympic Game and made the national swim team for the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, where she was selected by her team to carry the flag during the closing ceremony.
The same year she started Triathlon, she became 3times champion in both inside and outside of the United States. Also she competed in the Iron Man race (3.86Km/Swim, 180.25km/Bike, 42.2km/Run).
Becoming a mother made her recede from the game but when she found out, triathlon will become an Paralympic Game event she decided to came back to the Games. In Rio her first Triathlon race was on 9.11 which was an day that she would never forget.
